A Research on Nonlinear Impacts of Business Concentration on Reinsurance Demands of P&C Insurance Companies

GAO Tian-yi,DING Yu-gang

Abstract:The business concentration of an insurance company will affect its professional service availability and risk level, which will have a nonlinear impact on the reinsurance demand.Based on the unbalanced panel data of China's P&C insurance companies from 2002 to 2017,this paper used the fixed-effect panel model to empirically test the impact of the business concentration of China's P&C insurance companies on their demands for reinsurance. The empirical results show that the business line concentration has no significant impact on the reinsurance demand;business geographic concentration has a significant positive impact on the reinsurance demand;there is an inverse U-shaped relationship between the business geographic concentration and the reinsurance demand. The reinsurance demand reaches the maximum value when the business geographic concentration is about 62%-70%.When the business geographic concentration is less than 70%,the reinsurance demand increases with the increase of the former;when the business geographic concentration is greater than the value, the increase of the former will reduce the reinsurance demand. The conclusions of this paper are of great significance for insurance companies to formulate reasonable reinsurance strategies and improve risk management.
